“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1
This week I’ve had the pleasure of studying Psalm 46 for an upcoming message. During my time in the Bible, I discovered some interesting details. Especially with the historical background. More than likely, Hezekiah—who himself was a poet—penned this Psalm, along with Psalm 47 and 48, after God’s miraculous deliverance of Jerusalem from an invading Assyrian army. The Bible records this event in 2 Kings 18-19, 2 Chronicles 32, and Isaiah 36-37. This historical background gave me a new appreciation for this beloved psalm. I invite you to read Psalms 46, considering these other Old Testament passages. Check it out and let me know what you think about this biblical tidbit in the comments section.
PS – Psalm 46 was the inspiration of Martin Luther’s hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” too!
