Finding Peace in Stillness

Finding Peace in Stillness

This morning, I stoked the fire, and I waited for my coffee to brew as I looked outside to see a white blanket covering my beloved Briarwood. The pale snow glistened in the dim morning light before dawn. A sense of contentment flooded my heart, so I grabbed my journal to capture my thoughts.

Writing about my position as pastor, professor and writer, I wrote,

I am doing what I’ve always wanted to do with my life. I have one foot in the church world and the other in the academy…Why should I not be satisfied with where I am? I even have a cabin in the woods as a writing shed! God has blessed me with so much that I’ve taken for granted.

In the hustle and bustle of life, even a life that you prayed to live, it’s easy to slip into discontent. Always preoccupied with the next task, never appreciating the present. But this morning, in the dim glow of a new day, slowed down by the snow, I realized I am truly living the dream. Sometimes, the stillness of a quiet moment, punctuated only by the crackling of a fire and gurgling of a coffeepot, reveals your blessings.
